PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID IN CHILDCARE (FAIC)
 

INTRODUCTION
This course meets the EYFS, OFSTED & SureStart requirements for those working in care settings for the under 8's and also the requirements of the NCMA for those registering as childminders.  This course will provide delegates with the knowledge and skills required to provide first aid in an emergency situation.  The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions. 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Childminders and all those working in pre-schools, playgroups, or full day care settings and caring for the under 8's (meeting OFSTED requirements). 


COURSE DURATION                                                       

Two days (12 hours).


COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to relevant legislation and regulations:

- Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981;

- Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Introduction to first aid:

- Scene safety;

- Priorities of treatment;

- Emergency action plans;

- Checking the first aid kit.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR):

- Adult;

- Child;

- Infant.

Care of the unconscious casualty, including:

- Primary and secondary surveys;

- Recovery position.

Recognition and basic treatment of serious medical conditions, such as:

- Fainting;

- Drowning;

- Epilepsy;

- Diabetes;

- Poisoning;

- Shock;

- Head injuries;

- Spinal injury;

- Hypothermia;

- Choking.

Recognition and treatment of childhood illness, such as:

- Febrile convulsions;

- Meningitis;

- Asthma;

- Croup;

- Anaphylaxis (including the use of an EpiPen®).

Control of bleeding and bandaging techniques. 

Treatment of minor injuries, such as:

- Eye injuries;

- Animal bites;

- Insect stings;

- Nose bleeds;

- Burns and scalds;

- Soft tissue injuries (sprains and strains).

Recognition of broken bones (fractures).

Reporting of accidents/incidents.


ASSESSMENT

Continuous assessment by the trainer throughout the course.


CERTIFICATION

A certificate of attendance (valid for 3 years) will be issued on successful completion of the course.
