INTRODUCTION
This course covers the practical skills needed by a first aider in the modern workplace. The course is designed to give delegates the confidence and knowledge to deal with first aid emergencies. The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions. 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The course is ideal for larger or high risk workplaces. This course is suitable for nominated workplace first aiders, or anyone seeking comprehensive training in first aid.


COURSE DURATION                                                       

Three days (18 hours). The course can be split over several weeks if required.    


COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to relevant legislation:

- Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981;

- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.

Introduction to first aid:

- Scene safety;

- Priorities of treatment;

- Emergency action plans;

- Checking the first aid kit;

- Infection control;

- Basic triage.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 

Care of the unconscious casualty, including:

- Primary and secondary surveys;

- Recovery position.

Causes of unconsciousness.

Recognition and basic treatment of serious medical conditions, such as:

- Hypothermia;

- Heat stroke and heat exhaustion;

- Shock;

- Heart attack and angina;

- Stroke;

- Head injuries;

- Epilepsy;

- Diabetes;

- Poisoning;

- Anaphylaxis;

- Choking.

Identification and treatment of injuries such as:

- Fractures;

- Sprains and strains;

- Dislocations;

- Suspected spinal injury.

Management and treatment of burns and scalds.

Control of bleeding and bandaging techniques. 

Reporting of accidents/incidents.


ASSESSMENT

Formal assessments are carried out on the final day of the course.


CERTIFICATION

On completion of the final assessments, successful candidates receive a HSE approved certificate valid for three years.

N.B. The HSE recommends that all first aiders undergo a Basic Skills Update (3 hours) on an annual basis.
