- Scene safety;
- Priorities of treatment;
- Emergency action plans;
- Checking the first aid kit;
- Infection control;
- Basic triage.
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Care of the unconscious casualty, including:
- Primary and secondary surveys;
- Recovery position.
Causes of unconsciousness.
Recognition and basic treatment of serious medical conditions, such as:
- Hypothermia;
- Heat stroke and heat exhaustion;
- Shock;
- Heart attack and angina;
- Stroke;
- Head injuries;
- Epilepsy;
- Diabetes;
- Poisoning;
- Anaphylaxis;
- Choking.
Identification and treatment of injuries such as:
- Fractures;
- Sprains and strains;
- Dislocations;
- Suspected spinal injury.
Management and treatment of burns and scalds.
Control of bleeding and bandaging techniques.
Reporting of accidents/incidents.
ASSESSMENT
Formal assessments are carried out on the final day of the course.
CERTIFICATION
On completion of the final assessments, successful candidates receive a HSE approved certificate valid for three years.
N.B. The HSE recommends that all first aiders undergo a Basic Skills Update (3 hours) on an annual basis.
