EMERGENCY FIRST AID AT WORK (EFAW)

INTRODUCTION
This course will provide delegates with all the knowledge and skills they will require to provide basic life saving and first aid techniques in an emergency situation. The course includes both theoretical and practical sessions. 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The course is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks, where a first aider is required to take charge in the event of an illness or accident. This course is also suitable for people who provide support to more highly qualified first aiders.


COURSE DURATION                                                       

One day (6 hours).


COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to relevant legislation:

- Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. 

Introduction to first aid:

- Scene safety (including basic infection control);

- Priorities of treatment;

- Checking the first aid kit.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 

Care of the unconscious casualty, including:

- Primary and secondary surveys;

- Recovery position.

Recognition and basic treatment of serious medical conditions, such as:

- Heart attack;

- Stroke;

- Epilepsy;

- Shock;

- Choking.

Control of bleeding and bandaging techniques. 

Reporting of accidents/incidents.


ASSESSMENT

Continuous assessment by the trainer throughout the course.


CERTIFICATION

A HSE approved certificate (valid for three years) will be issued on completion of the course.

N.B. The HSE recommends that all first aiders undergo a Basic Skills Update (3 hours) on an annual basis.
